Abstract
All high speed railway lines in Europe as well as most conventional lines, plus several outside Europe, will be operated through the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) by 2020. The European Train Control System (ETCS), the technical part of ERTMS, is based on open public specifications with interfaces between track and onboard sub-systems, and has been designed with two levels of application to make it universally applicable with all kinds of infrastructure. ETCS will become a reality on several parts of the European railway network during the next five years, with additional projects to be launched continually.
