Abstract

The original European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), incorporating the European Train Control System (ETCS), has been specified jointly by the European railway manufacturing industry and the railway companies. The railways are progressing slowly towards implementation of ERTMS. The article discusses the many migration strategies available, particularly where railways require a solution that falls between ETCS levels 1 and 2.
