Abstract
The community noise impacts of extending electrification on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor (NEC) rail line from New Haven, CT to Boston, MA were recently evaluated as part of an environmental study. The project includes the conversion from conventional diesel-powered trains, operating at speeds up to 180 km/h (110 mph), to high-speed electric trains, operating at speeds up to 240 km/h (150 mph), with associated increases in train frequencies and lengths. Due to the perception that electric trains are quieter than diesel-powered trains, many people believed that the conversion would not cause significant noise impacts. Criteria used to assess project noise impact are first described, followed by noise projections for standard Amtrak train equipment.
