Abstract
Amtrak's High Speed Rail project now underway in the Northeast Corridor aims to narrow the gap between U.S. passenger rail speed and that achieved in Europe and Japan. Top speed will be 150 mph (241 kmh) by the year 1999, still slower than overseas operations but a significant leap forward for America's high speed future. If all goes according to plan, Amtrak's 231-mile (371 km), 4 hour 20 minute run from Boston to New York will take a mere 3 hours in 1999. Likewise, the time it takes to travel 225 miles (362 km) between New York and Washington, D.C., will shrink by 14 minutes from present Metroliner time, to 2 hours and 45 minutes, by October 2000. Amtrak plans to shave an additional 15 minutes off the New York-D.C. run later.
