Abstract
Amtrak's 240 km/h (149 mi/h) tilting trains, which will operate American Flyer passenger services on the Northeast Corridor linking Washington DC, New York and Boston, will feature a new tilting system which is different in concept from other existing systems. The contract for the trains is for 20 custom-built 9200kW trains, each consisting of two power cars and six 26.4 m-long (86.6 ft) tilting trailers, along with 15 200 km/h (124 mi/h) 6MW locomotives and three maintenance facilities. The motor bogies and the tilting trailer bogies will incorporate many of the characteristics of bogies in TGN trains and BB36000 high speed locomotives. Unlike the French TGV, however, the trailers will not be articulated. An advantage of this design is that it will allow changes to be made in the train consist.
