Abstract

In Australia, Queensland Rail's long-distance service between Brisbane and Cairns, a 1600 km trip, will be cut by 5 hours to 26 hours by a combination of higher speeds and a $A 240 million track upgrading project. The trains are diesel hydraulic tilting trains that have a top operating speed of 160 km/h. The trains are under construction and the schedule calls for service to begin in late 2002.
