Abstract
Rail travellers around Thailand have experienced cancelled trains and long delays. The problems are partially due to the network, which was built before 1951 and is mostly single track. The Thai government has approved a programme of track doubling. The first phase is concentrated around Bangkok. The section between Hua Mak and Chachoengsao has entered service. It was built by a consortium of Italian-Thai Development and Cogifer. There were no problems with possessions, but there were difficulties with access and some of the line was prone to flooding. The foundations, embankment formation, drainage, and tracklaying process are described. The 23 bridges on the line consist of 21 box girder bridges, one cantilever bridge and a temporary steel bridge. Much of the old track was upgraded and refurbished.
