Abstract
The Channel Tunnel Rail Link which is under construction in the south-east of England, boasts a number of superlatives. It is the first major new railway to be built in the UK for over 100 years, and it is claimed that its main bridge structure, the Medway Crossing, with its central navigation span of 152 m, will be the longest high speed rail span in Europe when it opens in 2003. The bridge is one of the few sections of the new rail link that is clearly visible to the public and as a result it is regarded as a landmark structure for the entire scheme. Its slender, 12.5 m wide, twin track design had to gain final approval from the Royal Fine Arts Commission.
