Abstract

This article describes the refurbishment work carried out to reinstate a branch line in Bristol, UK, to carry freight traffic. The line had never been officially closed but had been unused for twenty years. Track left in place was re-laid and remedial repairs, reconstruction and strengthening was needed for the bridges and tunnels. Modern trains are taller than those previously used on the route and in places the track level had to be lowered to pass below bridges or tunnels. The Pill Tunnel seemed to need underpinning at a section which had been relined: however it was discovered that the newer lining was sitting on its own footing and the underpinning was no longer needed. Environmental considerations were important as the track passed through a nature reserve, and negotiation was needed with local residents, some of whom opposed the re-opening of the line. Passenger services may be possible in the future with further upgrading.
