Abstract
Canadian capital Ottawa has developed an enviable all bus rapid transit service over the past two decades. The Transitway system is composed of 26 stations and nearly 20 miles of exclusive busways, the most extensive such system in North America. Yet, on October 15, 2001, rail transit arrived in all bus Ottawa, starting a two- to four-year pilot program designed to assess performance, cost, and rider response to light rail. This pioneering diesel light rail transit system is the first step of Ottawa's plans for a transportation systems that will meet the needs of future growth through 2020 and beyond. The planned C$3.25 billion public transit system that will rely heavily on rail is reviewed.
