Abstract
Light rail transit could be the solution in many North American cities that don't have the population and ridership of full rapid transit, but that want something more than buses. The success of the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) is profiled, which was ahead of ridership projections after only two years of operation. Diesel light rail transit has become popular in cities that would like rail transit, but where the budget cannot accommodate the cost of a double track and electrification. Ottawa's O-Train and the New Jersey Transit's River Line are successful examples of the diesel light rail transit.
