Abstract
Canada's capital city Ottawa has one of the most extensive Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems in North America. The city currently has over 950 transit vehicles, 151 routes, and 46 km of rapid transit service that delivered almost 87 million trips in 2002. This paper discusses the Rapid Transit Expansion Study that was initiated to develop a strategic plan for growing rapid transit ridership over the next 20 to 30 years. The study team, after examining various alternatives and technology options, recommended a blend of bus rapid transit and light rail (LRT) to serve Ottawa in the future. By extending the existing BRT lines and introducing LRT system within new corridors, the lines would operate in both exclusive and semi-exclusive right-of-way conditions. The recommended service would encompass a range of ridership forecasts and land use development conditions.
