Abstract
Canada's capital Ottawa has in operation the most advanced bus rapid transit in North America. This article reviews the study approved by the City Council which includes the first light rail line that, when completed, will give Ottawa a multimodal rapid transit system. The initial stress is on the rail extensions, but planning continues on the transitway extensions as well. The goal is to increase current transit share from 16 to 30 percent, which would result in a tripling of the system's ridership, currently more than 325,000 daily boardings.
