Abstract

Bridge engineering frequently requires innovation in bearing design. Various bridge construction techniques, and bearing designs to suit these techniques, have been used in several recent projects. This paper discusses some of these projects, focusing on such design aspects as: lateral and longitudinal launching of bridges, uplift bearings for a cable-stayed bridge, and load monitoring of the points of support of a highly skewed bridge. Several specific examples are provided and detailed.
