Abstract

The first 70 km section of the Channel Tunnel Rail Line (CTRL) will open next month heralding a new era of high-speed rail transport in Britain and providing another crucial link in the developing European high speed rail network. This successful completion of the first stage of the 109 km CTRL is a significant achievement after the decline and failure since privatization of the British rail network in the mid 1990s.
