Abstract
High speed rail has been very successful in Europe. Last year ten railway undertakings already generated 65.4 billion passenger kilometers with high speed train operations, i.e., one fifth of all rail passenger traffic. A total of 3,040 km of newly built high speed lines have been in use since June 2001. By 2010 and 2020 the numbers are expected to climb to 6,00 km and 10,000 km, respectively. This article looks at the success achieved on the current high speed rail network, and at the network expansion envisaged.
