Abstract

The author considers the transport needs of the mobility handicapped in Germany and assesses what provisions are currently available. It is suggested that the best solution for the future would be the development of a taxi which could be used to transport people with mobility handicaps and able-bodied persons alike, without too many modifications. Specifications for a vehicle for transporting handicapped people (VTH) (DIN 75078, Part 1) and for restraint systems in a VTH (DIN 75078, Part 2) are outlined. Suggestions are made for the design of a suitable taxi including vehicle type, seats, wheelchair area, kneeling system, doors and ramp. The advantages of taxis to the mobility handicapped are listed and the main recommendation made that the vehicle should not be distinctive in any way. For the covering abstract see IRRD 853163.
