THE TAXI'S ROLE IN FULFILLING THE TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS OF PEOPLE WITH MOBILITY HANDICAPS

Abstract

The author considers the increasing role of taxis in journeys made by mobility-handicapped people. The definition of a taxi, the numbers of people using them and the number of taxis available are examined. The requirements of the disabled and where taxis can provide suitable transport are assessed. Problems that exist currently in the use of taxis by the disabled are discussed including access, driver's attitude, cost, fraudulence and reservations. Suggestions are made for overcoming many of these problems. A taxicab classification system using stars and the use of a computer system to improve efficiency in planning services are described.
