Abstract

This article presents a detailed profile of the construction of the $968 million Uetliberg Tunnel, part of Zurich's west bypass. It includes geological maps of tunneled section, diagrams of finished tunnel, pictures of work in progress and map Zurich showing tunnel location. The author deals with varied geology, excavation methods and support in the tunnel project. Three primary methods of tunnel excavation are discussed: Core Construction Method used in the soft ground; Drill and Blast for the hard sandstone molasses; and the Tunnel Bore Extender. The TBE, or undercutting system, is discussed in detail. The author also discusses logistics and costs, and includes a question and answer session dealing with subjects such as safety; strength of rock, and labor organization.
