Abstract
This article presents a profile of the Moorcraft Quarry Tunnel in the UK, along with geological graphs, site photos, overhead maps and drilling diagrams. The author notes that the 120 meter tunnel faced significant technical hurdles, such as variable ground, low cover, and highway and gas main crossings. Project statistics, and preplanning are detailed, along with community concerns that limited tunneling options. The use of a TunnelBeamer distometer for reducing safety risks and eliminating the need for lattice girders, and a LaserShell concrete lining, are examined. The article concludes with a discussion of how the construction of a horseshoe shaped pilot tunnel was used to speed project completion.
