Abstract

This article focuses on the A3 Hindhead project in Surrey, United Kingdom, which includes a 1.83-kilometer tunnel. The author describes the planning phase, which began in 1983 with the government’s Trunk Road program, and the 20-year-long discussion focusing on the competing issues of environmental impact and economic benefits. The author also describes the geology of the Hindhead area with respect to the path of the tunnel. The tunnel’s alignment was based on geological factors. A detail discussion regarding the decision for using either a tunnel boring machine or sprayed concrete lining is given. The former was the method chosen.
