KCR (KOWLOON-CANTON RAILWAY) CORRIDOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT STUDY. 1. OVERVIEW OF THE STUDY

Abstract

This is the first of a series of three papers reporting the results of the study by the Hong Kong Transport Department using modelling techniques on a 64k microcomputer and the micro-trips suite of programs. The paper introduces the background characteristics of the public transport services and the design of the study. Objectives were to predict public transport demand in the corridor and in Kowloon for 1986 and 1991, to update bus route plans, to co-ordinate services and to assess interchange requirements. The corridor serves a number of new towns expected to house a population of about 900 thousand by 1991. External trips to the metropolitan area should be catered for mainly on the KCR which is to be connected with feeder buses. The transport policy recognises that its needs of the city are best met by an integrated multi-modal system giving public passenger transport a higher priority than private road users; some 80 per cent of the population use the public transport services daily. In the study, trip distribution procedure is simplified and a hierarchical approach is adopted based on origin-destination questionnaires conducted at major bus stops. (TRRL)
