Abstract
This paper describes the planning and design of public transport systems for three rapidly growing new towns in Hong Kong. Inter urban travel will be by high capacity heavy rail and by express bus services. Intra urban travel will be by conventional double decker buses and a few small buses. Trip generation and modal split surveys were carried out and mathematical models derived for forecasting purposes. The emphasis in planning was to establish an adequate level of service to encourage self-containment and to provide a feeder service to transport interchanges which are compact and convenient for pedestrians and minimise pedestrian-bus conflicts. Advanced technologies were not considered appropriate for Hong Kong because of their generally high costs.
