Abstract
IN ADDITION TO THE COMPREHENSIVE IMPROVEMENTS BEING CARRIED OUT TO LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN LARGE TOWNS IT IS NECESSARY TO GUARANTEE AN AT LEAST ADEQUATE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICE IN SUBURBAN AND RURAL AREAS. AS AN INTRODUCTION TO A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF AVAILABLE TRANSPORT IN THE GREATER HANNOVER AREA, STANDARDS OF SERVICE WERE INVESTIGATED AS THE LOWER BOUND VALUE FOR A PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICE SUITABLE FOR ALL AREAS. THIS WAS THE FIRST STAGE OF A GENERAL TRANSPORTATION PLAN (BUS) INSTIGATED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN WEST GERMANY. THE RESULTS WILL SERVE AS A GUIDELINE FOR FURTHER ASSESSMENTS OF PROPOSALS. STANDARD VALUES OF DAILY SERVICE FREQUENCIES CAN BE OBTAINED BY REPRESENTATION OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF DEPARTURES THROUGHOUT THE DAYTIME. IN FURTHER STAGES OF THE RESEARCH A NETWORK OPTIMISATION AND AN OPTIMUM DISTRIBUTION OF ROUTES OVER THE ROAD SYSTEM, FROM A TRANSPORTATION ECONOMIES VIEWPOINT, WILL BE INVESTIGATED.
