Abstract

Objective To study the effects of hyperuricemia on the level of blood pressure and the prevalence of hypertension. Methods 5,058 patients who were confirmed to be hyperuricemia in the Health Center of Anhui Provincial Hospital from January 2005 to December 2007 were enrolled to be the case group.Another 5058 people whose serum uric acid(SUA) were normal in the same health examination were selected and matched with the case group by sex and age to be the control group.SUA,total cholesterol(TC),triglycerides(TG),fasting blood glucose(FBG) and blood pressure were detected. Then the relationship of hyperuricemia and the prevalence of hypertension were analyzed. Results The mean systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure in the case group were significantly higher than that in the control group(P=0.000) by 4 mm Hg and 3 mm Hg,respectively. The prevalences of hypertension, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia were also significant higher than those in the control group(P=0.000).Hyperuricemia,male,age,obesity,diabetes,hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia were main risk factors for hypertension. Conclusions Hyperuricemia is associated with higher blood pressure and may be one of independent risk factors for hypertension.
