Abstract

Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effects of two different surgical procedures for pterygium. Methods A total of 48 patients ( 54 eyes) were randomly divided into two groups:23 cases ( 25 eyes ) for group A using pterygium excision combined with mitomycin C and 25cases (29 eyes) for group B undergoing excision of pterygium with limbal epithelial autograft. The surgery complications and recurrence were observed by record inspection in 1 week,2 weeks,I month,3 months,1 year and 2 years. Results All cases were followed up for 6 ~ 24 months.3 eyes in group A was recurred (12%) while only 2 eyes in group B pterygium recurrence observed( 6.89% ).Conclusion Pterygium excision and clinical analysis of limbus epithelial stem cell autografting can prevent pterygium relapse, rebulid and recover the structure and function of cornea ocular surface. This is one ideal operation method up to now, pterygium excision combined with mitomycin C is more suitable for the elderly and frail people or for the patients who can not tolerate long time operation. Key words: Pterygium;  Surgery;  Therapeutic effect
