Abstract
Objective To study the prevent methods of pterygium recurrence after operation. Methods A total of 114 patients (155 eyes) with pterygium were randomly allocated into two groups, all of the patients received pterygium excision and eonjunctival rotation autogratt hospitalized and analyzed retrospectively. There were 45 patients (62 eyes) in group A,all of the patients received radical pterygium removal, namely, pterygium excision and conjunctival rotation autograft combined with extended fascia removal and the residual conjunctive removed as possible. There were 69 patients (93 eyes) in group B,all of the eyes only received pterygium excision and conjunctival rotation autograft. All the patients of the two groups were followed up for 12 to 69 months with an average of 28.5 months, and observed if there were recurrences. Results There was 1 eye found recurrent pterygium in group A while 14 eyes in group B.The recurrent rates were 1.6% and 15.1% respectively. There were statistical significant differences between two groups analyzed by x~2 examination (x~2=7.49,P<0.01).Conclusions Radical pterygium removal is effective for preventing pterygium recurrence. Key words: Pterygium; Surgical methods; Prevent recurrence
