Abstract

Objective To observe and compare the theraputic effects between simple pterygium excision and pterygium excision combined with limbus cornea stem cell transplantation in the treatment of primary pterygium. Methods This was a retrospective case series study. Sixty-one eyes in fifty-six patients with primary pterygium from Apr. 2011 to May. 2012 including 24 male(twenty-six eyes) and 32 female(thirty-five eyes) in Chengde traditional chinese medicine hospital were randomly divided into two groups.Group A(twenty-six patients,twenty-eight eyes) were undertaken simple pterygium resection while group B(thirty patients,thirty-three eyes) were carried excision of pterygium with limbus cornea stem cell transplantation surgery. All surgeries were performed by the same skilled surgeon. All patients were followedup after the operation for 12 months to investigate the recurrence rate. Chi-square test was used to evaluate the recurrence rate between these two groups. Results Group A: pterygium recurred in 6 eyes(21. 4%);Group B: pterygium recurred in 2 eyes(6%). The recurrence rate of group A was significantly higher than group B(χ2= 5. 162,P 0. 05). No sever intraoperative and postoperative complications happened in two groups. Conclusion Pterygium excision combined with autoallergic limbus cornea stem cell transplantation is effective and safe in treating pterygium.
