Effect of compound lidocaine cream on urethral irritation due to the indwelling urethral catheter

Objective To explore the effect of compound lidocaine cream on urethral irritation in patients undergoing indwelling urethral catheter.Methods 80 patients were randomly assigned to receive either conventional catheterization using paraffin oil (control group) or catheterization with application of compound lidocaine cream on the catheter and then infusion of the same cream into the urethra (study group).Results There was significant difference in urethral pain at postoperative consciousness recovery and 6,12,and 24 hours after surgery between the two groups (P<0.05); Sleep quality also differed significantly between the two groups (P<0.01).In the study group,patients had better sleep quality and urethral pain were markedly relieved at the four different time points.Conclusions Compound lidocaine cream is effective in reducing urethral irritation due to indwelling urethral catheter,improving sleep,and significantly increseing comfort in the patients.
