Effects of compound lidocaine cream on emergence agitation during the recovery period of general anaesthesia and urethral irritation due to indwelling urethral catheter

Objective To explore the effects of compound lidoeaine cream on emergence agitation during the recovery period of general anaesthesia and urethral irritation in patients undergoing indwelling urethral catheter.Methods One hundred patients were randomly assigned to receive either conventional catheterization using paraffin oil(the control group) or catheterization with application of compound lidocaine cream on the catheter(the study group).The emergence agitation during the recovery period of general anaesthesia and urethral irritation due to indwelling urethral catheter were compared between the two groups.Results There was statistically significant difference in emergence agitation during the recovery period of general anaesthesia between the two groups [(30.0,15/50) vs(86.0%,43/50)],P0.05.Statistcally significant difference was found in urethral pain at 2 and 12 hours after surgery between the two groups(P0.05),while no statistically significant difference at was found at 24 hours(P0.05).Conclusion Compound lidocaine cream is effective in relieving emergence agitation during the recovery period of general anaesthesia and reducing urethral irritation due to indwelling urethral catheter.
