Abstract
Caverns that create void areas underneath concrete panels in pavement are somewhat common in Prairie County, Arkansas, and in the case of a busy stretch of I-40 that carries traffic from Little Rock to Memphis, it was crucial to rejuvenate the paved prairie pocket, whose panels were rocking back and forth a few inches as vehicles traveled above. Details of this National Asphalt Pavement Association Hayes award finalist project are presented here, including the challenges faced from flooding, prepping the road, mix design, bridge replacement, and volumetric testing; all of which led to a smooth ride in the end.
