CLINICAL EFFECTS OF BI-LEVEL POSITIVE AIRWAY PRESSURE VENTILATION IN COPD PATIENTS WITH RESPIRATORY FAILURE

Abstract

[Objective]To investigate the treatment effects of Bi-level positiveairway pressure(BiPAP)ventilation in acute exacerbation of COPD patients with respiratory failure.[Methods]82 patients treated by BiPAP on the basis of routine treatment(treatment group).The efficacy was evaluated and compared with 90 similar patients who were not supported by BiPAP(control group).[Results]After BiPAP ventilation the PaO2 and PaCO2 were greatly improved in treatment group(P﹤ 0.01).In control group,the PaO2 was also increased,but the PaCO2 did not show significantly difference after routine therapy.The relief rate of clinical symptom was significantly higher than that in control group.BiPAP ventilation can reduce the intubation rate and shorten average length of stay in COPD patients with respiratory failure.[Conclusion]BiPAP ventilation is beneficial to COPD patients with mild or medium respiratory failure,which could improve the PaO2 and PaCO2 and relieve symptom,especially to the resumption of the respiratory muscles.
