On the Relations between Taizhou Dialect and Wu Dialect

Abstract

How to categorize Taizhou dialect in Wu Dialect has been a problem bewildering dialectologists for 20 years.This paper compares the characteristics of linguistic items in pronunciation,vocabulary,grammar and finds that Taizhou dialect is more similar to the Southern Wu dialect than to the northern Wu Dialect.From a geographical and historical point of view,Taizhou is closer to the south of Zhejiang than to the North of Zhejiang.Taizhou dialect should be an independent part in the Wu Dialect and it would be more justified to classified Taizhou dialect into the South Wu Dialect rather than in the North.
