Abstract
Objective:To investigate the efficacy of mifepristone plus misoprostol versus simple rivanol in induction of abortion. Methods:The data from randomly selected 200 women at 13-20 weeks of gestation seeking abortion in our hospital were analyzed retrospectively.Among them 100 women were admitted between 1998 and 1999 and treated with rivanol, while the other 100 women were admitted between January,2004 and December,2006 and treated with the combination of mifepristone plus misoprostol. Results:For abor-tion through 13~20 weeks of mid-gestation,the group treated with mifepristone in combination with misoprostol demonstrated higher successful abortion rates, shorter duration of labor, and fewer bleeding compared with the group treated with rivanol alone. There was no sig-nificant difference in the placenta and fetal membrane residues between these two groups. Conclusion:Mifepristone plus misoprostol is safe and effective for induced abortion at 13~20 weeks of gestation. It can increase the successful abortion rate, shorten the duration of abortion,as well as reduce the amount of bleeding after abortion and the occurrence of birth injuries. The procedure is highly recommended in clinical practice.
