Application orthognathic technique in treating long-standing jaw fractures

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of orthognathic technique in management of long-standing jaw fractures. METHODS: Fifty-six cases of long-standing jaw fractures admitted in our department from January 1999 to January 2005 were analyzed retrospectively. Thirty-six patients were treated with orthognathic surgery. The orthognathic principles and methods including VTO,model surgery and splint were used and evaluated. RESULTS: Excellent clinical results of dental occlusion and facial contour were obtained in 34 patients without severe complications.The remaining 2 patients had normal occlusion after intermaxillary distraction. CONCLUSIONS: Orthognathic technique is an important and effective method on treatment of long-standing jaw fractures. The other fractures of facial bones besides maxilla should be managed surgically in the same operation.
