A Journey to the West and the Types of Ghost Stories

Abstract

Analysis is made on the four types of ghost stories since the first publication of A Journey to the West. The first type is characterized by the author’s soaring imagination and the fighting between the opposite forces by their magic power. It can be exemplified by The Evolution of Immortals (feng shen yan yi). The second type is rich with symbolic meaning, expressing the author’s life philosophy by the means of ghost subject matters. Its best example is Notes to A Journey to the West by Dong Shuo. The third type is a little cynical. The author attacks the evil forces by his cynical presentation of ghost stories. His language is usually humorous. Its best example is The Slaughtering of Ghosts (zhan gui zhuan) by Liu Jin. The last type is a combination of ghost, human being and other subject matters, and it can be best represented by the Fairy Tales (lu ye xian zong) by Li Baichuan.
