Abstract

From the Wei and Jin Dynasty to the Tang and Song Dynasty, writings related to ghost stories came out one after another without a stop. The book, Ghost Stories (Liao Zhai Zhi Yi), is certainly a continuation in this regard. People create a world with ghosts to enjoy the merits from some horrible description or to seek certain comforts for themselves. As a result, some non-existing spiritual images became the real beings in the society and thousands of readers are deeply touched and impressed by them. The novel, Ghost Stories (Liao Zhai Zhi Yi), by Pu Songling can probably be regarded as the most successful in this category. He has produced a perfect account of the ghost incidents, ranging from the common emotions shared by the people in the world, between humans and between lovers to the criticisms of the human society. The description in his novel is reasonably developed, carefully plotted and effectively persuasive-all this demonstrates that he is really superior to others in this field.
