High Pulse Pressure Is Associated With Organ Damages In Aged Patients With Essential Hypertension

Abstract

Objective To study the correlation of pulse pressure with cardiovascular and kidney's function and structure in aged essential hypertensive patients Methods Two hundred sixty three aged patients with essential hypertension were enrolled into the following two groups by the mean values of pulse pressure: PP≥60 mmHg ( n =142)and P\%P\%60 mmHg ( n =121) Ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM)were examined The ratio between early diastolic peak flow velocity and atrial peak flow velocity(E/A),ejection fraction (EF),left ventricular mass index(LVMI),carotid arterial diameter(CAD),carotid artery plaque rate(CAPR), and intimal medial thickness(IMT) were measured by echocardiography Creatinine clearance rate(Ccr) and microalbuminuria(MAU) were tested Results In the group with PP≥60 mmHg, EF, E/A and Ccr were significantly decreased, while LVMI, CAPR, IMT, CAD,and MAU were increased compared with the group with P\%P\%60 mmHg( P 0 05) Conclusion The increased pulse pressure was associated with the alteration in left ventricular systolic and diastolic function, increase in LVMI, CAD, CAPR, IMT and MAU, and decrease in Ccr in aged patients with essential hypertension PP may be one of the risk factors for the organ damages in elderly essential hypertension
