Abstract
[Objective] To evaluate the impact of ambulatory pulse pressure (APP) on left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in aged patients with essential hypertension. [Methods] 59 aged patients with essential hypertension were examined by ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM) and echocardiography, the different index of ABPM and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and Ejection fraction (EF) were measured. The patients were divided into group A (24 h PP≥60 mmHg, n =29) and group B (24 h PP60 mmHg, n =30 ) according to 24 hPP. [Results] In the group A (24 h PP≥60 mmHg), ABPD and EF were significantly decreased (P 0.05 and P 0.01), while ABPS, LVMI and arterial stiffness index (ASI) were increased compared with the group B (24 h PP60 mmHg) (P 0.05). [Conclusion] The increase in pulse pressure is the important determinant of LVH in senile patients with essential hypertension.
