Abstract
Objective To assess the therapeutic effects of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation on patients with respiratory failure caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods Thirty-five cases of severe type 2 respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were retrospectively analyzed. Blood gas and clinic signs were monitored before, during and after continuous non-invasive positive pressure ventilation. Results Blood gas was improved rapidly 3 hours after treatment (P0.05),and further improved in 24 hours to 72 hours after treatment (P0.01). The successful rate was 88.6%. Conclusion Non-invasive positive pressure ventilation is an effective therapy for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and severe respiratory failure complicated with hypercapnia.
