Abstract

Objective To study the disinfection property of polyhexamethylene biguanidine hydrochloride. Methods Quantitative germicidal test, broth dilution and animal toxicity test were used to carry out in the laboratory to observe its germicidal or inhibitory efficacy and toxicity. Results Minimum inhibitory concentration of polyhexamethylene biguanidine hydrochloride to Escherichia coli,Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was from 2 mg/L to 50 mg/L,to Candida albicans was 100 mg/L.The average killing logarithm values of E.coli,S.aureus and P.aeruginosa exposed to the solution containing 200 mg/L polyhexamethylene biguanidine hydrochloride for 20 min were 5.00.The killing logarithm value of C.albicans exposed for 30 min was 4.00.The mouse acute oral LD50 was above 5 000 mg/kg.Result of micronucleus test of mice marrow polychromatophilic erythrocyte was negative. Conclusion Polyhexamethylene biguanidine hydrochloride has good inhibitory efficacy, and can kill the vegetative forms of bacteria and C.albicans effectively.Polyhexamethylene biguanidine hydrochloride belongs to practically non-toxic class and has no mutagenic effect.
