Clinical Observation of Donepezil Hydrochloride for Vascular Dementia

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:To observe the efficacy of donepezil hydrochloride for vascular dementia.METHODS:60patients with vascular dementia were randomly assigned to receive donepezil hydrochloride(treatment group)or piracetam(control group)for12wk in addition to the conventional drug therapy for cerebrovascular disease.The efficacy and dementia amelioration of two groups were assessed by mini-mental state examination(MMSE),activities of daily living(ADL)scale and test of drawing clock.RESULTS:Compared with the control group,patients receiving donepezil hydrochloride had a remarkable improvement in MMSE(P0.01),ADL(P0.05)and test of drowing clock(P0.01).In2cases of the treatment group,ADR in cholinergic excitability such as stomachache,dizziness and nausea,etc.appeared within3days but disappeared later with continuation of drug taking.CONCLUSION:Donepezil hydrochloride is reliably curative,well tolerate and safe for vascular dementia.
