Abstract

In 1757 under the reign of Emperor Qianlong,hundreds of years after poetry was excluded from imperial examinations ,Qianlong decreed that poems with five characters to each line and octonarian poems be re - included in imperial examinations at the provincial and metropolitan levels.This was a year of remarkable significance in the history of China's imperial examinations.This paper studies the application of poetic writings in all levels of examinations in early Qing Dynasty and explores its far - reaching influence with regard to the educational background and personal qualities of Qianlong and his grandfather Kangxi.
