Abstract
In the 22nd year of Emperor Qianlong's reign,Shitieshi(standard exam poems) was added to the testing system of imperial examination, and this came seven hundred years later after the withdrawal of lyric poetry from the imperial examination system, which was viewed as a major move to reform the system of imperial examination in the Qing Dynasty. This paper attempts to find out the reasons behind this cultural event and its successful implementation. It is found that this move was jointly effectuated by the accumulation in the reformations of the imperial examination conducted by Qianlong's predecessors, the needs of poetic education and propaganda in favor against the defunct Ming Dynasty, and the quality of advancing with the times in the anthologies of Shitieshi itself.
