Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of pricking bloodletting method on intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in the treatment of cervical spondylosis. Methods One hundred and forty patients with cervical spondylosis were randomly allocated to an electroacupuncture group of 60 cases, a pricking bloodletting group of 60 cases and a control group of 20 cases. Fasting blood samples were taken from a cubital vein before and after treatment to measure ICAM-1. Results There was statistically significant difference in ICAM-1 scores between the pricking bloodletting group and the electroacupuncture group (P0.05). The cure rate was higher in the pricking bloodletting group (61.7%) than in the electroacupuncture group (13.3%); there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups (P0.01). The pain score decreased more in the pricking bloodletting group after treatment (P0.01). Conclusion Pricking bloodletting method is an effective treatment for cervical spondylosis. It can better reduce ICAM-1.
