Abstract

The loss and restructuring of national character, and the extinction and restoration of the beautiful and love constitute the ideological essence of Shen Congwen's essays about West Hunan. Putting themselves against the historical background, integrating history and reality, the individuals and the nation, nature and humanity, these essays vividly portray a comprehensive West-Hunan society at the turn of the 20th century and express the author's concern about the future of the Chinese nation.
