A study of paroxetine combined with olanzapine in the treatment of geriatric depression

Abstract

Objective:To explore the efficacy and side effects of paroxetine combined with small dose olanzapine in treatment of geriatric depression. Method:96 elderly patients were randomly assigned to study group ( n = 48) and control group ( n = 48) for 12 weeks. The study group was treated with paroxetine combined with olanzapine while control group with paroxetine only. The clinical efficacy was evaluated using Hamilton depression scale ( HAMD) as well as clinical global impression ( CGI) ,and the side effects were evaluated by treatment emergent symptom scale ( TESS) after 2、4、8、12 weeks treatment. Results:The study group showed more decreases in HAMD and CGI score than control group. There were no significant differences in TESS reduction. Conclusion:Paroxetine combined with small dose olanzapine is effective in the treatment of geriatric depression with fewer side effects.
