Perindopril vs captopril in treating essential hypertension each 60 patients

Abstract

AIM: To compare the effects of perindopril and captopril in treating essential hypertension. METHODS: patients with moderate essential hypertension (n=120) were randomly assigned to 2 groups. Perindopril group of 60 patients (M 45, F 15; age 60±s 15 a) received peridopril 4_8 mg, po, qd, for 4 wk. Captopril group of 60 patients (M 45, F 15; age 60±14 a) received captopril 12.5_25 mg, po, tid, for 4 wk. The efficacy of 32 (each group 16) hypertension patients were evaluated by 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. RESULTS: the total efficacy was 92% in the perindopril group and 78% in the captopril group (P0.05). The rate of adverse reaction was 12% in the perindopril group and 28% in the captopril group (P0.05), but all were mild. CONCLUSION: Perindopril and captopril has similar hypotensive effect, but perindopril is a much safer drug.
