Abstract

AIM: To study the effect of perindopril in treating essential hypertensive ( EH) class II accompanied with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). METHODS: Forty-three patients were divided at random into 2 groups: 22 patients (M 22, age 54 ± s 9 a) in treatment group received perindopril 4- 8mg, po, qd for 4 wk; 21 patients (M 21, age 54 ± 10 a) as control (14 patients received captopril 25 mg, po, bid or tid for 4 wk; 7 patients received nifedipine 10 mg, po, tid or qid for 4 wk). RESULTS: The hypotensive effects were remarkable in 2 groups (P0.01). The antihypertensive efficacy was significant in patients with ambulatory EH (P0. 05 or 0. 01), while the reduction of blood pressure was less outstanding in patients tending to normal 24 h blood pressure (P0.05). The abnormal peripheral arteries in 16 of 22 patients (73%)with PAD were reversed after 4 wk treatment of perindopril. Adverse reaction of perindopril was slight. CONCLUSION: Perindopril is safe and reliable in treating male patients with EH as well as PAD.
