A controlled study on the treatment of senile depression with sertraline and amitriptyline

Abstract

Objective To explore the efficacy and side effects of sertraline and amitriptyline.Methods 96 elderly depressive patients who met CCMD-3 criterion for depression episode , were randomly assigned to sertraline group(n=48) and amitriptyline group (n=48) for the treatment of 8 weeks. The clinical efficacy was evaluated by HAMD and HAMA. The side effects were evaluated by TESS. Results There was no significant difference of the efficacy between two groups (P0.05). Sertraline showed rapider efficacy and less side effects than amitriptyline (P0.05). Conclusions Sertraline showed observably rapider efficacy in reducing depression and anxiety symptoms and less side effects in treating elderly depression.
